However, are these your only option when it comes to a monitored alarm system? The answer is a quick no - log onto the internet and do a search for "home security companies" and you'll get back a wealth of options from which to choose. So if you want to find a company that's right for you and your home, what do you do? How do you know what features to look for and compare?

Most home security companies will offer twenty-four hour monitoring of your home and alarm. This means that someone is sitting on the other side of a computer screen that will start beeping if your alarm goes off. They will then call emergency services. This process is pretty much the same with all home security companies.

So when comparing packages and services, ask yourself just how many monitoring centers they have. What if power goes out at one, do they have any type of backup system or center? Does your own alarm system get rerouted to another? Some smaller home security companies only have one office or one monitoring station; this can be a problem in case of blackout, natural disaster, or some such circumstances.

Also, how well trained is their staff? No one expects them to hire paramedics or emergency medical technicians, but they should be able to remain calm and knowledgeable regardless of the emergency. Some home security companies pride themselves on the extensive training they give to their technicians, while others perhaps have just a small amount of training.

Of course you will want to consider cost when comparing home security companies, as some will range in price from less than $10 per month to $30 or even more, depending on the number of alarms, the monitoring they offer, and so on. Price should not be your deciding factor of course, as sometimes you do "get what you pay for," and paying those few extra dollars per month for a company with several monitoring centers and a well-trained staff can be worth it.

And if you're not very comfortable putting in your own alarm system, you may want to check if these home security companies do installation for you or if they simply sent you a kit and expect you to have it installed yourself. While it's certainly possible to do it yourself, it may be worth the extra money spent to be sure that you're doing it correctly.

And the last thing to consider about home security companies is if they want to lock you into a long-term contract. Be sure you read the fine print and understand if there are any penalties involved if you need to cancel early. Many home security companies offer a lot of options that can really help your peace of mind, if you take the time to shop and compare.

How Home Security Alarm Monitoring Can Help Your Family

For those who are unfamiliar with the concept, home security alarm monitoring refers to having an alarm at your home that is connected to a company that monitors its activities for you. If your alarm is tripped, the person at the company will immediately call police, fire, medical personnel, or whoever else is necessary. In some cases, the home security alarm monitoring company will also offer a type of panic button that, when hit by someone in the home, will trip the alarm and also cause them to call emergency services. All of this may seem like a lot of fuss, but in what way might a home security alarm monitoring company or services help you and your family? What are some circumstances that might warrant you considering such packages and services? Let's take a look at two very common family situations that can be helped with such services.

Elderly Relatives

If you have elderly relatives in your home or that are in their own home and who might have some physical limitations or medical problems, a home security alarm monitoring system can be of great help. If he or she has a medical emergency, many such systems have an intercom that can be tripped from any point in the home. This can summon the person on the other end of the monitor and rescue personnel can be called. By doing this, the elderly person does not need to make it to the phone, fumble with dialing, and so on.

And with the panic button provided with many home security alarm monitoring systems, this can also provide peace of mind in case of an intruder or other threat, if the alarm has not been tripped itself. By hitting the panic button and sounding the alarm, there is no need to face the intruder or try to get to the phone.

Children at Home

If you have children that are at home after school while you're still at work or that you have with a babysitter, a home security alarm monitoring system can also provide quite a bit of comfort for parents. Knowing that the child or babysitter will not need to think about whether or not he or she should call the police or will need to face an intruder can give you a lot of peace of mind. That there is a real live person on the other end of your home security alarm monitoring system is a great asset for many parents, who can rest assured that their children will not be left to fend for themselves in the event of an emergency. The panic button is also a great option if they see someone lurking outside or feel threatened; there's no need to wait for the alarm to be tripped.

These are just two common scenarios in a family that may warrant a home security alarm monitoring system. They are usually very affordable and easy to install, and can be well worth the time and investment.

Home Security Store - Plan Your To-Buy List Before Hitting the Store!

There's probably not a person alive that doesn't have some type of weakness, some hobby or "thing" that they really love and can be just absorbed in. Some women can shoe shop for hours or love miniatures and doll houses, some men can lose themselves in hot rod magazines for hours or spend an entire afternoon just browsing the home improvement store. And for many, a home security store can be just as distracting, as they drool and grunt over the hundreds of accessories, gadgets, and options available to them. And today, many home security stores are featuring so-called spy gadgets, cameras and microphones that are typically no bigger than a dime. Which means that if you have any type of budget that you need to stick to, it's a good idea to make your list before heading out to shop!

But suppose you really don't have much of a budget or are shopping for something for someone else - what are some really cool gadgets and toys you can find at today's home security stores?

Those spy gadgets are just the beginning. So-called bullet hole cameras need just that to operate - an opening no larger that a bullet hole. They can be placed virtually anywhere in the home or office and connect to a VCR or DVR player to record their pictures. Many home security stores offer a wide variety of such cameras and most are only around $100. IP cameras are those that broadcast their video to a website; these are great options for parents who want to watch their children when they're at work or who need to keep an eye on an elderly relative in the home. They may have no need to record the video, just watch it when they can. Any home security store that offers home surveillance cameras should have a wide variety of IP cameras to choose from.

Home automation is another popular option these days that can be found at most home security stores. When wired throughout the entire house, you can turn on and off the outside lights, adjust the temperature, and even set the alarm without getting up. Or these can be set to timers, so that your lights and thermostat can be controlled without you even thinking about them. This is a great option for those who travel a lot and may want to control their home system while they're away. Most home security stores can explain how to install and use such systems easily so that even the novice can hook one up.

Whatever type of gadget or accessory you're into when it comes to home security and surveillance, you can no doubt find it at a reputable home security store. There are many online as well that will let you build your own home security system and will give you some recommendations. Just be sure you exercise some restraint and stick to your list so that you don't break your budget at the home security store!

Home Security Cameras - Installing Home Security Cameras

There are really two different types of home security cameras that any homeowner would consider today, and they are the ones that record to a regular VHS tape or DVD, and the ones that show live pictures on an internet site. If you're considering home security cameras for your own home, which should you choose?

The answer to that question is of course going to be different for every homeowner, and really boils down to just why you want home security cameras in the first place. Some may immediately say that this is an easy question - you want them for security. But ask yourself, security from what? Potential burglars when you're away or during the night? Or are you concerned with activities that may be going on in the home when the kids are there, when you have household help present, and so on? Having home security cameras installed that record to a VCR or DVR may be a good idea for typical security scenarios, such as wanting to scare away burglars. A potential thief may see the camera and be motivated to leave or move to a different target.

Home security cameras that record to a tape are also good if you suspect theft from persons like the cleaning company, contractors, the nanny, and so on. You can record and then view the tapes at your leisure, and also have evidence you can present to the person or to the police.

But for some families, a parent may want to protect their children or an elderly relative who may be home alone, or keep a watchful eye on them. For example, you may suspect that your child has friend over after school when you've told him or her that this wasn't allowed. By having home security cameras that broadcast over a website, you are able to log on and view what's happening in your house at any given time. If you see your child having friends over or doing anything else, you can simply call home and deal with the situation. In cases like these, you may not be concerned with having home security cameras that actually record events to be played back later, but just need something that will let you be in two places at once, so to speak.

Of course there are some precautions needed about installing home security cameras. If you have someone working for you such as a nanny or full-time housekeeper, this person could be considered an employee and it would be illegal to tape them in certain circumstances, such as the bathroom or their private bedroom. You may also want to let people, including your children, know that you're installing home security cameras so that they don't get caught doing something embarrassing, or they begin to think that you don't trust them. But if you install just one or two home security cameras outside your main entrances to scare off potential intruders, this can actually go a long way toward protecting your home and your family.

Home Security DIY - Some Quick Tips for Home Security DIY

Paying a professional to install your home security system can be a good idea, especially if you're not familiar with wiring, hardware, connecting video monitors to cameras, and so on. But many are finding that home security DIY is an option, even if you're not a hardware expert or have very few home improvement skills. This is because there are more and more home alarm systems that are geared toward the do-it-yourselfer, and they are becoming easier and easier to install and use without help from the pros. So if you'd like to learn a bit about home security DIY, here are some quick tips and hints that will help.

Go Wireless

In the "olden days," home alarms were a mess and tangle of wires and cables, as each individual alarm needed to be connected to the keypad or console. This sometimes meant ripping up carpet or even making holes in the wall in order to hide the wires from plain view or to get them out of the way. A great option today for home security DIY is a wireless system, as these need no cables or wires or cords or any of those cumbersome things. You simply mount the boxes to the areas you want protected such as doors and windows, plug in the keypad, program it as instructed, and you're done. There really isn't a simpler option for home security DIY when it comes to alarms for the house and property.

Buy Home Security Kits

One things that's very difficult for anyone interested in home security DIY is knowing which components you need if you want to use more than just an alarm, want to install surveillance cameras, or do anything a bit more complicated. How do you know what monitors, recorders, adapters, and other elements to purchase? How do you know that one will be compatible with another? A great solution to this common problem with home security DIY is a home security kit, whether for home alarms, cameras, floodlights, or any other option. These kits typically come with all the elements you'll need and you can be assured that they are all compatible with one another. Anyone not sure of where to start with home security DIY would do well to get a kit, as they can of course be upgraded, have accessories added at a later time, and so on. They can be found for just alarms, or just surveillance cameras, or anything else. If you have an unlimited budget and an understanding spouse, then by all means, go for it. But for most people, being in a home security products store can be like a kid in a candy store - your eyes get big, you start drooling, and then next thing you know you walk out of there with far too many things you don't need.

To keep you from making that mistake, here is a basic list of the most commonly chosen home security products on the market and their use.

Alarms

An alarm system is pretty straightforward; you hook it up to doors and windows and then it either uses a wire or a wireless signal that connects to the keypad. When the alarm is activated, anything that breaks that signal causes the alarm to be tripped.

Some persons on a limited budget or who live in apartments where they can't install this type of home security product still have many options open to them. Standalone alarms come in a variety of models. For example, there are some that you attach to a door or window and which use a signal between two pieces. If that signal is broken by someone opening the window or door, an alarm is sounded. There is also another type called a doorstop alarm; this looks something like a regular doorstop with a little "tongue" that slide partway under the door, with an alarm mechanism behind it. If the door is opened just a little bit, it will hit that alarm mechanism and cause it to be sounded. These types of small, inexpensive home security products are great options for those who don't want to invest a lot of money or who may be intimated by complete alarm systems.

Cameras

Closed circuit cameras are fast becoming very commonly used home security products, as they are becoming more and more affordable. They are easy to install and can be wired or send a wireless signal to virtually any VCR or DVR, or can send a signal to an internet address so that you can log on and view the live feed. Anyone interested in keeping an eye on their home when they're not away will appreciate this type of home security product, especially if you have children or elderly relatives that are home while you're at work and need that extra monitoring.

Some have even found that fake cameras work great as home security products. They come with a wire and a little red light that makes them look very real. Of course, they're not as good as a real alarm as they serve little purpose if someone does actually break in, but can still be a deterrent to any would-be thief.

Home Security Camera - Some Tips for Purchasing It

Many people these days are installing a home security camera at various vantage points around their home and property. These can be used for either indoor or outdoor applications, to keep an eye on anyone approaching your home and anyone that's already inside your home. A home security camera can scare away potential intruders, find out who has been stealing your mail, keep an eye on your babysitter or full-time housekeeper, and let you check in on your kids while you're still at the office.

If you're looking for a home security camera to protect your property and make potential intruders think twice about breaking in, you'll want one that is weatherproof and that works at night. Most now are made in bullet style; the rounded design cuts down on glare and allows for a much better picture reception and wider angle in the same size of camera. They also usually come with a visor to do the same. All you need to install this type of home security camera is cable, a VCR or DVR to run the cable to, and adapters. Most cameras of course come with the cable and adapters and the necessary hardware to mount them to the wall. If you have a VCR or DVR at home that you want to use, be sure that the Of course you need to provide your own screwdriver.

For those who want more than just a basic home security camera, you can purchase an entire kit or package. Depending on how much you want to spend, you can get a basic kit that includes a camera, monitor, and VCR or DVR. Some will include more than just one home security camera; sometimes up to eight. For most homeowners, this will be more cameras than you need, but sometimes getting more than one is a good idea too.

These packages can be a great idea for those who have no idea how to get started with a home security camera system, or who want to be sure that they can hook up more than one camera to their monitor and taping system. Most monitors in these systems will show split screens with each camera, just like you see at stores, banks, and other such places.

Another type of popular home security camera is one that broadcasts the signal to an internet site so that you can log on and watch from anyplace with an internet connection. This is very handy for those who want to check in on the kids, the nanny, or just their home and property when they're at the office or on the road. And of course there is what's called spy-size home security cameras that are very small and that can be hidden behind virtually anything in the home.

If you're not sure what type of home security camera is right for you, don't hesitate to talk to the sales staff at your retail store, or contact them online. Usually they're very knowledgeable about the products and can make personal recommendations.

Brinks Home Security

Why Should You Choose Brinks Home Security?

Many people are familiar with Brinks Home Security when it comes to protection from intruders, fire, and the like. It's become something of a household name for many; but with all the different companies that also offer alarms and such, why choose Brinks Home Security for your home? What makes them different?

Twenty-four Hour Monitoring

There are many companies that will offer monitored alarm systems. What this means is that when an alarm in your home is tripped, it is noticed by a real live person at a monitor in the office of Brinks Home Security, and they immediately respond. Many people appreciate this type of support as they may become flustered and upset when an alarm is tripped, or may panic and freeze if there is an intruder in the house. By having someone right there at Brinks Home Security that will call the police for you, there is added peace of mind in knowing that you're taken care of.

For some people, it may be the opposite problem - they're so afraid of setting off an alarm that they don't use it, thinking that they don't want to bother the police in case of a false alarm. Knowing that someone from Brinks Home Security will immediately call and reassure them that everything is okay may actually encourage them to use the alarm on a consistent basis. Either way, a monitored alarm system is a welcome relief for many.

Easy to Use System

Even the smartest mathematician can be confused when trying to figure out and remember some of the complicated keypads and systems that come with some alarms. Brinks Home Security prides itself on the ease of use for its keypads; even a child can learn how to use it. Their keypads also come with one-touch emergency responses, meaning that if there is a break-in or other emergency when the alarm is not set, a person can just hit that panic button and set off the alarm. This is good for emergencies during the day when you're less likely to set the alarm or when the children are home alone or just with a babysitter for whom you don't want to give the code.

Trained Personnel

When was the last time you spoke with a salesperson who knew less about their product or store than you did? Sometimes even those working behind the counter of a fast food restaurant don't know how to work their own equipment! But with Brinks Home Security, their personnel are extensively trained in not just the monitoring services, but in emergency situations as well. While not being paramedics or emergency medical technicians, they are trained to stay calm and to handle emergencies regardless of their nature.

It's no wonder that Brinks Home Security has won J.D. Powers & Associates prestigious "Outstanding Customer Service Award" for many years in a row. Brinks Home Security takes their responsibility and their commitment to you and to your family's safety very seriously.

Home Security Surveillance - Using It To Your Advantage

There could be any number of reasons why someone would want to use home security surveillance for their private residence. It could be that you suspect someone that works for you is stealing. Or maybe you're concerned about your teenager's comings and goings while you're at work. Or crime is up in your neighborhood. Whatever the reason, home security surveillance has its positive benefits and its drawbacks as well. Let's explore just a few of these here, and then you can be better prepared to decide if this investment is for you.

First, note that there are typically two types of video surveillance systems. One is recorded to a video tape or DVD, and you play it back at your leisure or watch it on a monitor while it's being recorded. Another broadcasts the video to a website while it records.

The advantage of one over the other is that the website broadcast can be viewed anywhere that there's an internet connection. If you're considering home security surveillance because you suspect your teenager is doing something he or she shouldn't when you're at work, you can log in, watch the broadcast, and then call home and tell them to get off the couch and get their chores done, or to send their friends home, or to put that bag of chips back in the cupboard. You can also do this if you have a nanny or babysitter watching your children when you're away. In cases like this, you want to just log in quickly and check on things, rather than needing to actually save recordings of the video. Of course, not many choose this type of home security surveillance, but it's interesting that many daycare centers and nursing homes are now offering it as part of their pricing. Parents can watch their children when they're at work and you can be assured that your elderly parent or relative is not being harmed while you're away.

The other type of home security surveillance that records the video to a tape or DVD is best used if you suspect someone is stealing or vandalizing your property. You may not be able to monitor your property twenty-four hours per day, and of course not while you sleep, but buy using this type of home security surveillance, you are able to have a recording in case you need to call the police or show up in court.

Of course, you want to be sure that you're not using your home security surveillance to do anything illegal or that might unnecessarily bother the neighbors. Don't be taping their yard or their activities. And definitely don't tape someone in your house without their knowledge if they were to have a reasonable expectation of privacy. There have been many cases of persons being sued because they used home security surveillance in this way. Not only might you face monetary fines, you could actually go to jail depending on who you taped and what you do with the tapes afterward

Some Do-it-Yourself Home Security Options

There is literally no limit to the options you can choose when purchasing items for home security. And there are many companies out there that will do a complete evaluation of your home and install a big fancy system for you. But if you're on a budget or don't want to turn your home into Fort Knox, there are some do-it-yourself home security options for you. Some of these options are very simple, and some are a bit more complicated, but many can be done by anyone with a screwdriver and a bit of planning. To make it easier on you, let's run down these do-it-yourself home security options and then you can be better prepared to make your choices as to what will work best for you.

Standalone Alarm Systems

If you don't want to mess with a big alarm system, standalone alarm systems are one of the better do-it-yourself home security options. These are small, battery-operated units that attach to an individual door or window. They are usually two small boxes that communicate with each other through a magnetic signal. You place one box on the door or window, and one on the wall right next to it. When one of those boxes is moved such as when a door or window is opened, it breaks that magnetic signal, and the alarm sounds. This kind of do-it-yourself home security system is very simple to use; the worst thing that usually happens with it is that someone forgets to turn it off before opening the door or window themselves.

Another standalone alarm that is a great do-it-yourself home security for individual doors are called doorstop alarms. They look like regular doorstops with a little lip that slides under the door itself, and has a small box with an alarm at one end. If the door is opened it will hit that box and set off the alarm. This is a great do-it-yourself home security choice for those who live in apartments, especially women who live on ground floor units, and are just concerned about basic security.

Purchasing an Alarm System

Most alarm systems work by having a sensor that is attached to the door or window and runs a wire or sends a wireless signal to a keypad that controls it. If you are interested in installing this yourself, there are many do-it-yourself home security alarm systems that are very easy to hook up yourself. They typically have step-by-step instructions that tell you how to mount the sensor, run the wire or set up the wireless signal, and how to program the keypad. For any do-it-yourself home security alarm system, be sure to choose something very simple. Most homes don't need any of the fancier alarm systems anyway, and by keeping it simple, you're more likely to be able to understand and install the system yourself.

As with most improvement projects, simplicity is the key to a successful do-it-yourself home security setup of any type.

Wireless Home Security System - Why Opt for a Wireless Home Security System?

Having an alarm system in your home is not a bad idea. Crime rates are rising virtually everywhere, including in so-called "good" or "nice" neighborhoods. Many families are becoming increasingly aware of their need for added security, and a good option for many is a wireless home security system. Especially if you have children home alone after school or own a lot of expensive household items will you want to consider installing such a system.

Why do we say this; what advantages does a wireless home security system have over a hardwired system? Here are some things to consider:

Most alarm systems work in virtually the same way. There are sensors that are attached to the area you want to secure, such as a door or window, and usually to the wall next to it. Those two sensors usually have a signal running through them in a continuous loop; when that loop is broken from someone opening the door or window, the sensor sends a signal to the mechanism that sounds the alarm. In a wireless home security system, that signal is sent through the air. If you opt for a hardwired system, you need to run a wire or cable from every sensor you hook up to the keypad. Obviously this would be cumbersome, more difficult to install for a do-it-yourselfer, and rather unsightly. A wireless home security system is typically much more subtle and can usually blend in with any décor or home design. And because there are no lines or cables, you don't need to make holes in the walls, tear up any carpeting, or fuss with trying to get the wires to run flush along a wall or doorframe. They're also a great consideration for home with young children, as you don't want them to ever get their hands on the wires or cables of the alarm system.

A wireless home security system is usually much easier to install than a hardwired system. You typically just plug in the keypad, mount the security sensors where you want them to be, and program it rather quickly. There usually isn't much more involved than that.

If you want to install your own wireless home security system, there are some things to consider. You can usually get one with a sensor that is connected to a key fob so that you don't even need to remember and enter a pass code to deactivate the alarm. A hardwired system runs on electricity to operate whereas wireless systems run on a lithium battery. Many times the wireless home security system needs to be tested to be sure the battery is running at optimal levels.

Many wireless home security systems can also be monitored alarms, meaning that an outside company can be monitoring your alarm system at their office. If the alarm is tripped, the company will alert police and rescue personnel immediately. This can be a great asset for children who are home alone or those who may get easily flustered in an emergency situation.

Paying Attention to Home Network Security

Surfing the internet at home used to be the stuff of science fiction movies and television shows. The idea that any home would even have or need a computer used to be laughed at, much less a computer that connects you to the rest of the world! But as the use of the internet at home become more common, the concern for home network security has as well. Many people are concerned about identity theft, viruses, and a host of other problems that they invite into their home through their own computer. And of course those with children who use the computer and the internet are also concerned about what danger they could be facing. Improving your own home network security is not that difficult or complicated; you don't need to be a software engineer or computer wizard to do so. Some simple steps are all that's needed and they can do a world of good in protecting you, your identity, your computer itself, and even your own family's safety. Let's take a look at some of those basic home network security steps you can take.

Using Wireless

Many persons today are opting for a wireless modem to connect them to the internet rather than a phone line or cable. One of the biggest mistakes people make toward home network security is not locking their signal. When you have a wireless signal, it is just sort of floating out there in the air and can be easily pirated by anyone with a wireless adapter. However, by locking your signal, you are telling your computer and the wireless provider that no one can use that signal without a password set up by you. One of the reasons this is important with home network security is because while someone can log onto the internet using your wireless signal, they may also be able to trace everything that goes on in your computer through the wireless signal. If you do any type of banking or personal finance on your computer, it's not difficult for someone with a bit of computer knowledge to keep track of your keystrokes and therefore learn your user I.D., password, and all other financial information.

Setting up a locked wireless signal is not that hard and should be part of the installation process. Your program should prompt you for a password to lock the signal. If you've already installed your wireless router and receiver and need help with setting up a password, don't hesitate to call your service provider and ask them to walk you through the process. This can be one of the best things you can do for your home network security, so don't delay.

Being Smart

Using parental locks, monitoring your computer's history, and keeping passwords safe are all common sense ideas, but you'd be surprised how many people ignore their home network security by neglecting these things. Computers are like cars - if you use them safely, you're chance of a problem is greatly reduced.

Home Security System - The Number One Mistake Most People Make

Many people today are turning to a home security system to protect themselves, their family, and their belongings. The right alarm system, couples with some good spotlights and common sense changes to your property can go a long way toward scaring off any would-be intruders. When a thief sees the keypad of the home security system, he's more likely to move to the next target; even if you have some nice things inside your home, why risk it when someone down the street or a few blocks over has the same home electronics that you do but without any type of home security system protecting it?

There are no end to the gadgets and accessories that you can add. Surveillance cameras abound and are now commonly found around residential homes and yards; this means both inside and out. Spy cameras are also becoming more affordable and easier to install, while their pictures are actually becoming crisper and clearer as well. Whatever you want to accomplish with your home security system, there's likely to be a piece of equipment or gadget for you. Whether it's to find out whose been stealing your mail from your mailbox or to keep an eye on the nanny while you're away, there's a component for you.

But do you know the number one mistake most homeowners make with their home security systems? You'd be surprised at what it is; most people are. It has nothing to do with the installation or setup. Most these days feel that it's worth paying a professional to do the installation for them; with many systems, the installation is included or is just a few dollars more. Rather than trying to mess with the wiring or electrical or programming of their home security system, homeowners would rather than the installer come in and get it running for them; this can be a wise choice if you're not familiar with electronics.

No, the number one mistake many people make with their home security system is not using it. They oftentimes forget to set the alarm before going to bed or when going out. Sometimes it's just forgetfulness; you're not used to doing this when you're rushing out to work in the morning or when you're exhausted at the end of the day, so the home security system is the last thing on your mind.

But there is another reason why many neglect using it, and that's because they're afraid of setting it off accidentally. Like the smoke detector that sounds just because you're cooking bacon, homeowners are afraid of doing something wrong or negligent and causing the home security system to sound for no reason. They fear the embarrassment that would cause with neighbors and police.

Some Easy Home Security Tips

Everyone today is no doubt worried about personal security and safety, and with good reason. Crime is up in many areas, and the threat of violent crime especially makes many homeowners and family heads worry. While there is no perfect solution to every threat, by following some simple home security tips that we'll outline here, you can greatly increase the chance that you'll scare off any would-be burglar or intruder.

It may sound strange, but one of the best home security tips is to think like a thief. Take a look at your house versus other houses on the block. If you were a thief, wouldn't you avoid the brightly lit ones and opt for the very dark ones that provide you some cover? Or if you see one with the curtains wide open at night, just advertising all those fancy home electronics, wouldn't that be your prime target? Many home security tips are based around knowing how a criminal thinks, and why they make the choices they do. You can therefore have an advantage if you learn to do the same.

Another great home security tip is to remember that lighting is your friend. You may appreciate it being pitch black when you're trying to sleep, but a burglar knows that if there is light in a yard or over an entrance to a potential target, he is more likely to be seen by the neighbors who would then alert the police. If you would ever have an expert evaluate your home's needs, you would find that most of his or her home security tips would revolve around where you could and should install lighting on your property and house. Having lights set up with motion detectors is usually sufficient, and remember that they don't need to be bright floodlights either. Just a medium wattage is usually enough to scare away any intruders. Of all the home security tips you'll ever get and try to implement, this one is probably the simplest and the best. Again trying to think like a thief, consider how you would feel if you were trying to jimmy open a door or window and were suddenly standing in the spotlight. Wouldn't you run away?

One of the most obvious home security tips you'll get - and one that the kids will love - is to get a dog. You don't need a vicious attack dog to protect you, just one that barks at strangers. The noise is enough to make a burglar think twice about breaking in, as the homeowners are alerted to his presence. Even poodles can do the trick!

None of these home security tips are terribly complicated, and again, they won't work for every situation and circumstance. But most people don't need to lock down their home like a fortress, they simply need to deter any would-be thieves or intruders. If you implement these simple home security tips, you're sure to be able to do just that.

So Many Home Security Systems!

These days, advertisements for home security systems are everywhere, and chances are that virtually everyone knows the names Brinks, ADT, and Guardian. These companies of course no doubt started by offering corporations and businesses alarm systems, but soon found a wide open market for home security systems, since so many homeowners and residents have felt the need to add some extra protection to their home other than just a good deadbolt on the door.

If you personally are looking into home security systems, what are some things you should be keeping in mind for your selection? How do you know which one is the best for you, and what features you need versus which ones are just a waste of money? Obviously the answer will be different for everyone, but let's take a closer look at how home security systems operate and what they offer, and then maybe you can make the best decision for you and your family.

First of all, really think about your own security needs and why you're contemplating these home security systems. Do you have reason to suspect that someone is stealing from you on a regular basis, or have you already been the victim of vandalism? Do you just want something basic that will deter a would-be burglar or thief? Or do you have children and family members that are home during the day and that may need assistance at the touch of a button? By really assessing the things you need as a family, you can be better able to pick and choose through the available home security systems that are out there, and decide which features are best.

If you have reason to suspect that someone is stealing from you, perhaps a housekeeper or contractor or neighbor, you would choose the home security systems that include closed circuit cameras so that you can catch this person in the act. You might also consider this if you suspect abuse on the part of your child's babysitter or the person that takes care of an elderly relative in your home. These types of home security systems are hooked up through a wire or send a wireless signal to a VCR or DVR, and this way you have a videotape or DVD that you can present to the police or in court.

For those who just want a basic model that will scare away intruders or that can summon the police or emergency medical services at the touch of a button, there are alarm home security systems that can do both. The basic models have receivers hooked to doors and windows and set off the sound of the alarm if these are opened when the alarm is set. Monitored alarm home security systems are those that send a signal to a company that is monitoring your alarm on their computer system. If the alarm is tripped, they immediately call you, the police, and emergency services. These usually only cost a small monthly fee after they are installed.

Why Be Worried About Your Home Security?

Many homeowners and family heads are increasingly concerned about home security. Crime rates continue to go up everywhere, and more and more persons are worried about gun crimes, home invasions, and burglary. It's a sad fact that a person cannot be safe while inside their own home.

It's not pure paranoia that makes someone concerned about their own personal property and home security for their family. Not only are crimes on the rise, but violent crimes are increasing as well. And what is truly disturbing is that many crimes are committed by persons who seem to get younger and younger every year. There seems to be no respect taught for someone else's property and possessions. If someone wants something, they just reach out and take it - without any concern for whether or not they hurt someone else in the process. So if you're concerned about home security for you and your family, what can you do? Should you just get a cheap stun gun and surround your property with barbed wire? Do you need to be suspicious of every person jogging down your street?

Chances are you don't need to go to those extremes. There are many simple strategies to increase your own home security without bringing a gun into the house or turning your house into a fortress. Sometimes common sense solutions are all that's needed for one's home security.

Being aware of your surroundings and of strangers on your street is a good idea. If you see someone in your neighbor's yard and it doesn't look as if they belong there, and especially if you know your neighbor are not home, then you should consider calling the police. Part of your own home security is letting potential thieves know that your block is well observed. It also helps to make sure the city is keeping the streetlights in good repair and that they are working properly. Light is also important for your own home security, so be sure that your outside lights are working as well. Installing a light over the garage and near the entrances of your house are very important steps. Any home security expert will tell you how important that proper lighting is to home security.

It's also important to be careful of unwanted visitors when considering your own home security. Be wary of persons that identify themselves as city workers, utility workers, or anyone else that wants to come into your home or onto your property. All utility workers will have identification badges with their pictures, but don't even assume that this is enough to identify them. Before letting them in, call the utility company and confirm the visit. There have been many unfortunate instances of con artists and criminals forcing their way into a home by using this type of approach.

So yes, there are many reasons to be worried about home security. But if you use these common sense approaches, you can lessen your risk of crime greatly.

The Home Security Guide

Welcome to The Home Brewing Guide.
