Everyone today is no doubt worried about personal security and safety, and with good reason. Crime is up in many areas, and the threat of violent crime especially makes many homeowners and family heads worry. While there is no perfect solution to every threat, by following some simple home security tips that we'll outline here, you can greatly increase the chance that you'll scare off any would-be burglar or intruder.
It may sound strange, but one of the best home security tips is to think like a thief. Take a look at your house versus other houses on the block. If you were a thief, wouldn't you avoid the brightly lit ones and opt for the very dark ones that provide you some cover? Or if you see one with the curtains wide open at night, just advertising all those fancy home electronics, wouldn't that be your prime target? Many home security tips are based around knowing how a criminal thinks, and why they make the choices they do. You can therefore have an advantage if you learn to do the same.
Another great home security tip is to remember that lighting is your friend. You may appreciate it being pitch black when you're trying to sleep, but a burglar knows that if there is light in a yard or over an entrance to a potential target, he is more likely to be seen by the neighbors who would then alert the police. If you would ever have an expert evaluate your home's needs, you would find that most of his or her home security tips would revolve around where you could and should install lighting on your property and house. Having lights set up with motion detectors is usually sufficient, and remember that they don't need to be bright floodlights either. Just a medium wattage is usually enough to scare away any intruders. Of all the home security tips you'll ever get and try to implement, this one is probably the simplest and the best. Again trying to think like a thief, consider how you would feel if you were trying to jimmy open a door or window and were suddenly standing in the spotlight. Wouldn't you run away?
One of the most obvious home security tips you'll get - and one that the kids will love - is to get a dog. You don't need a vicious attack dog to protect you, just one that barks at strangers. The noise is enough to make a burglar think twice about breaking in, as the homeowners are alerted to his presence. Even poodles can do the trick!
None of these home security tips are terribly complicated, and again, they won't work for every situation and circumstance. But most people don't need to lock down their home like a fortress, they simply need to deter any would-be thieves or intruders. If you implement these simple home security tips, you're sure to be able to do just that.
